What is a Wellness Exam?

A wellness exam is a simple and valuable part of veterinary care. They're most easily described as a routine medical examination of a pet who appears healthy. An important factor of the wellness exam is that they allow our veterinarian to be proactive rather than reactive about your pet's care. With the information we gather at our wellness exams, we'll create an individualized care plan that we will utilize to address any health concerns we uncover. That's why it's vitally important you bring your pet in for their exams while they're healthy rather than waiting for signs of illness or injury to become more pronounced.

What Happens at a Wellness Exam?

At your pet's first wellness exam, we'll begin with a thorough review of their medical history, if available, looking for any existing conditions or issues they might have. We'll then talk to you and ask if there's anything about your pet's health that concerns you. Our veterinarian will also ask questions about your pet's diet, lifestyle, and exercise habits.

After we gather this preliminary information, we'll begin the checkup. Your pet's wellness exam will usually consist of:

  • Weighing your pet
  • Checking gait and stance for irregularities
  • Listening to heart and lungs
  • Examining paws and nails for damage or signs of more serious health issues
  • Closely examining skin for any issues like dryness and parasites
  • Checking the coat for bald patches or dandruff
  • Looking closely at ears for things like ear mites, polyps, or bacterial infection
  • Checking eyes for cloudiness, excessive tearing, discharge, and eyelid condition
  • Examining your pet's teeth for signs of damage and decay, and gums for periodontal disease
  • Palpating your pet's body for signs of illness, such as swelling, pain, and any limited range of motion
  • Determining if there are any major issues with internal organs

We know this process might sound like a lot, but don't worry. Our experienced vet team is skilled in moving through the exams quickly and efficiently, carefully performing each step while we collect a wealth of information. Coming in for a wellness exam also provides an opportunity to get your pet supplemental services that will benefit their health.

Our Brampton Pet Vaccination Clinic

In an effort to save you time, we're happy to offer vaccinations at your wellness appointments. We offer annual vaccinations and boosters and will go through your pet's vaccination records to determine what vaccines they need. Some of these vaccines are legally required and are usually administered when animals are young or rescued. Others provide a way to supplement your pet's immune system. We will provide you with information about each vaccine and will give you recommendations about the most beneficial options for your pet's particular situation.

Parasite Prevention & Treatment

Depending on your animal's condition and any worries you might have about them, we may request a fecal sample to determine whether your pet has any intestinal parasites. If present, these parasites may be severely affecting their health, so it's important to identify and deal with them quickly. However, we will always discuss whether we think this step is necessary.

What Happens After the Wellness Exam?

Animal Wellness Exams in BramptonAfter the wellness exam, our veterinarian will take the time to discuss our findings and answer any questions you might have about the next steps. If your pet appears healthy, we'll offer home-care tips like diet and exercise plans, oral health maintenance, and preventing parasites like heartworm. We are passionate about educating you about what to look for if you're worried your pet is sick or may become sick. Monitoring your pet's wellbeing is an ongoing process, and if you have any questions after leaving our practice, we encourage you to contact us.

If there are signs of injury or illness during the exam, we'll speak with you about any additional diagnostics we might need to perform or any treatments that might be beneficial immediately. If your pet needs more advanced diagnostics to determine the causes of any issues or they need dental care, our staff will assist you in setting up the necessary follow-up appointments.
